A color rendering index (CRI) is a quantitative measure of the ability of a light source to reveal the colors of various objects faithfully in comparison with a natural or standard light source. Light sources with a high CRI 

are desirable in color-critical applications such as cultural relics and artwork.

The index is measured from 0-100. Typically, light sources with a CRI of 80 to 90 are regarded as good and those with a CRI of 90+ are excellent! CRI of  100 is perfection! The general rule is: The higher the CRI, the 

better the color rendering capacity.

Which CRI Ranges to Use

When purchasing and installing white LED lights, we recommend a CRI of over 90 but also say in some projects, a  minimum of 80 can be acceptable. Below is a brief explanation of the CRI ranges:

CRI 95 - 100 →  Phenomenal color rendering. Colors appear as they should, subtle tones pop out and are accented.

CRI 90 - 95 → Great color rendering! Almost all colors 'pop' and are easily distinguishable. 

CRI 80 - 90 → Good color rendering, where most colors are rendered well. Acceptable for most commercial uses. 

CRI Below 80 → Lighting with a CRI below 80 would be considered to have poor color rendering. Under this light, items and colors may look desaturated, drab, and at times unidentifiable. It would be difficult to 

distinguish between similar colors.
